Plumbing: Water Pipe - Galvanized Pipe

Plan on Upgrading down the road:

Galvanized pipe is a material that will, in all likelihood, need eventual replacement.

Unfortunately, there is no way to improve a galvanized pipe once it has lost water pressure. The only remedy is replacement.

What is the issue?

Simply put, galvanized pipe is a steel pipe with a galvanized zinc coating. As the pipe ages the interior of the pipe will begin to corrode and close down the diameter of the pipe, causing an eventual drop in water pressure.

Copper & Galvanized Connections:

When two dissimilar metals are put into contact, a reaction known as “Galvanic Corrosion” can occur. This can accelerate the rate of corrosion on the pipe.

This is seen typically at a fitting connection between a copper and galvanized pipe. To overcome this issue there are special “dielectric” fittings that should be used as needed to insulate the two pipes from direct contact.
